The Irish Silver Half Crown was minted from 1928 to 1967 and was one of the largest and most significant coins of Ireland’s pre-decimal currency system. Designed by Percy Metcalfe, the reverse depicts the powerful Irish horse, representing the nation’s proud independence and vitality, while the obverse bears the traditional Irish harp, one of the oldest national symbols still in continuous use.

Early issues, minted between 1928 and 1943, were struck in .750 fine silver, making them not only valuable for their metal content but also cherished artifacts of Irish heritage. Larger and heavier than the Irish Florin, the Half Crown was widely circulated during a period of profound change in Ireland’s history, making it a symbol of resilience and continuity for the Irish people.
