The Cremation Ash Process

A small amount of ash is mixed directly into the crushed obsidian before it's set into the band — carried in the ring itself, not simply placed inside it. Here's exactly how the process works.
A Note on Sizing
The Morgan Silver Dollar Inlay is available in whole and half sizes 9 through 15 only. The channel cut for the inlay needs real depth to hold the opal and obsidian securely, which requires a large coin — and a large coin makes a large ring. In practice, this makes it best suited to men's hands, though anyone comfortable in a size 9 or above can wear one just as well. If you're not certain of your size, request a free ring sizer before you order — once forged, this ring can only be adjusted up or down by half a size.
Looking for something smaller? We've occasionally created ash inlays without opal in smaller coins — like a half-ounce Gold Eagle or a silver half dollar — since skipping the opal allows for a shallower channel. This isn't a standard offering, but if it's something you're interested in, ask the Foundry's Concierge to discuss whether it's possible for your situation.

We mail you a kit
It includes a small vial for the ash, a free ring sizer, and a postage-paid return envelope.

That's all we need — a small amount is enough to be part of the inlay.
We forge your ring
Your chosen opals are set into a channel cut around the band. The obsidian is mixed with a jeweler's-grade resin and your ash, then applied to fill the channel around the opals. Once fully cured, everything is sanded and polished smooth — including the coin's original face detail, which doesn't survive this process. What you're left with is a smooth, finished band; the design and lettering on the inside of the band remain, but the outside is a smooth mirror finish.
Your unused ash is returned
Whatever isn't used comes back to you along with your finished ring.

Opal isn't meant to sit still.
Photos can only show one angle at a time. Opal shifts color and flash as it moves — this is what it actually looks like as it catches the light and brings it alive. And even video doesn't do it justice.

What if I choose the wrong size?
Inlay rings can only be resized up or down a half size, so it is important to get the size right before ordering. However, if it needs a slight adjustment, resizing is fast and free - for life.
How do I measure without a jeweler?
A free ring sizer ships to you before we forge anything — it's the most accurate way to measure at home.
Can the coin ring be worn daily?
Yes — every piece is built for daily wear, not display. However, like with any fine jewelry, we recommend taking your ring off before performing any activities with heavy or repeating impact on the hands - working with metal or wooden tools, yard work, going to the gym, etc.
How long does a commission take?
Usually 4-5 business days once we know your size (and have your cremation ash in hand, if you choose the Memorial option).

About the Legacy Collection
Legacy Chamber exists for something a standard coin ring can't do: hold color, and in some cases, hold the memory of a loved one.
Every piece here begins the same way — a Morgan Silver Dollar, channel-cut around its band and filled with crushed obsidian and your choice of colored opal, then sanded and polished until the surface is smooth.
That last step is worth stating plainly: the coin's original face detail — the lettering, the design — doesn't survive this process. What you're left with is a smooth, mirror finished band carrying color instead of coinage detail, although the inside of the band perfectly preseves the coin's original details in full. If you're looking for a ring that preserves a coin's original detail, our standard Sovereign Gold and Heritage Silver rings do that; Legacy Chamber is a different kind of piece entirely.
